RAFFAELE
D’AMATO

(Maiori 1857-1921)

Raffaele D’Amato (Maiori 1857-1921) completed his first studies with the painter Gaetano Capone, and then to the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, where he studied under Domenico Morelli. With the new century, the artist, overcoming a deep creative crisis, arrives to renew his art coming out from abused registers of Genre Painting. It is a new season, which is revealed in two works of high pictorial quality, both dated 1919, that register the influence of his friend Pietro Scoppetta and the neapolitan Luigi Crisconio: the beautiful night view of the Torre normanna a Maiori, already in the halls of Social Circle in Maiori and Sulla terrazza dell’Hotel Caruso di Ravello (o L’ora del tè); Maiori sotto la pioggia, dated 1920, with bright colors and post-impressionistic accents.
